Unforgetable month of June!!!

Hello!

June will be an unforgatable month!!!
I had superb views of a Jaguar at the Pantanal - Swiming across the river, then, later coming out of the water & watching us - eye to eye - for a while then, climbing a bank & leaving the area...

I will also shall return to Manaus after a couple of years...The purpose: To scout a new Jungle Lodge and also meet friends - Old and new ones...

Then, I will go to Rio to guide for a few days at REGUA...

In the mean time, I had a chance to visit the family in Aracaju, spending Valentine's day with my wife & watching my soon palying soccer and making goals!!!

Just got back from the Pantanal!
What a wonderful trip & What wonderful guests: Three people from Californina and one couple from the East Coast - They were all long time friends.
We had loads of birds at the Pantanal - Plus a special cherry at the top of the cake: A Jaguar!!!
First, we had it swimming, then leaving the water, then, looking at us then, finally, climbing the river bank...

Well, 2010 is being an absolutely fantastic year!
Very few times I had the chance to enjoy the Family & also have wonderful tours, with very nice guests.
Sometimes, things goes wrong such a flat tire...But, 2010 is being great - Every single day of every single trip I had been leading is being nice - After almost 30 years guiding tours, some people asks me if, Im not tired of doing this - My answer is: No. I'm enjoying it just like on my first trip - making discoveries & learning more and more - It think that is the wonder of Nature.

The Cone-Billed Tanager - A VERY Rare Bird!

Very Good News!

Last year the very rare Cone-billed Tanager was found at the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso.
This was a "mystery" bird for many, many years: Read about 50 years!
Since the location where it was collected first, was not clear...

The Double-toothed Kite.

Today, I would like to share with you a personal observation done by Thomas Sigrist, on his book: "Birds of Brazil".
He says he had seen the Double-toothed Kite, following a group of monkeys, the reason would be the fact the monkeys where scaring cicadas. But, at a certain moment the monkey stopped for some rest. The Kite, then, started chasing the monkeys, trying to force them to continue moving thru. the branches!!!
That would be something wonderful to see!!!

Great Combination: Coffee and Birds!

Hello!

For those that already birded in Brazil and for those that still are planning a first trip to this wonderful country, might wondering the reasons of the title of my BLOG today...

Well, Brazil is known by its coffee...but, not the way we drink it...We like it as strong as it can be...turning even a small cup of coffee into a true & powerful "cafein weapon!":-)

The good birding lodges serve them, very early...usually, half an hour before the sunrise...sometimes...I bring it to the bedroom of my guests - What a surprise for them to get such "room service" so early...
I tell you: A good coffee , as the first thing in the morning - Helps a lot!
Then, later combined the excitment of seeing Lifers...makes a perfect birding time!

Dutch Photographer in Aracaju!

Someone, once said: Birding in the afternoon is never as good, as birding in the morning - Specially, at the Tropics.
This week, I had to go to the airport, very early in the morning - Before the sunrise...
When, I returned home, I drove thru. a very nice area with Palm Trees - I could hear the birds & see some of the flying...What a wonderful way to start a day!
It brought me memories of so many mornings that I birded in so many places in Brazil...
The excitement of seeing birds all the day long...

The Most Beautiful Forest in Brazil is in Bahia!!!

Today, I would recommend & talk about the most beautiful forest in Brazil.
It is located at the State of Bahia, at its southern region.
It is quite preserved there, specially, because the area has been used for shade grown cacao.
The size of the trees is absolutely fantastic, as well, the incredible diversity of plants there: In some case, more than 400 per hectar!!!
This forest is a combination of the Atlantic & Amazon Forest: On its best, since we have the same type of combination in other areas of Brazil...
Birding is also one of the best in Brazil, being Boa Nova a true Bird Paradise!

Good Reasons to Come to the Pantanal in MAY.

Hello!

Today, I would like to recommend a Bird Trip to the Pantanal, in May.
This is an incredible time to visit the largest wetland of the World.
Reasons: It is already dry season, that means the risk of rains will be minimum. Besides, you still can get the good side effects of the previous rain season, such a luxuriant green vegetation, blue sky - free of smoke and haze.
Another good point would be the lack of tourists in that time of the year. Which helps to have a very calm atmosphere at the lodges.
Birding is excellent, watching the first Roseatte Spoonbills & America Woodstorks "returning home" and some left from the "rainy season" such the White-faced Ibis & lots of Maguari Storks!
In fact, next May 1st-8th, I will be leading a tour. There is only one couple booked for that, which means you are welcome to join us!

Pink-legged Gravateiro - Well seen!

Very Good News: My guests saw the Pink-legged Gravateiro - Very Well !!!

It was a pair of adults with a juvenal.

Apparently, the best months to see this incredible bird - would be the months of December and January, when they are nesting, and, since their nests are right by the road, any one can see them quite easily!

This is the home of a very rare & Brazilian endemic bird: The Pink-legged Gravateiro.
We found already several nests, near the lodge but, NO birds... :-(

MUCUGE- BAHIA

I'm still on the road...

We had a great time at the county of Mucugê - State of Bahia.

This place is not far from the village of Lençóis.

I, highly, would recommend - at least - one overnight there. So, besides the very rare Sincorá Antwren, you could also get some of the Cerrado specialties such the Collared Crescentchest
and the Rufous-sided Pygmy-tyrant.

Besides, the places is VERY beautiful!

The Road was too Bad!!!

Hello !

Well, the road was too bad!
We couldn't get to the very end of it.
So, we birded the lower part, which access is OK.
The main problem with the last part of the road is: It is NOT a road but, a cattle track...without any gravel. The mud on it is very sticky, adding layers to the tire making the tire to lose contact with the ground & making the driver to loose control of the vehicle.
And, walking that strecht takes about two hours - Also a very tough walk since you get layers of mud in your sole...
At the lower part we got several views of the Seven-coloured Tanager, which is a bird we dreamed in watching!
We got other good birds, as well, such the white-fringed and white-flanked Antwrens. A bird that made as very happy was the Blue-crowned Motmot.
Today, we are heading off to the State of Sergipe - Home of the most rare Fire-eye of Brazil:
The Fringe-backed Fire-eye!

Road Conditions - Pernambuco

Just arrived from Palmares - Pernambuco.

We managed to visit the Fazenda Linda, having GREAT looks at the Forbe's Blackbirds!

But, the road was good only because we had two days without rain.

We are now, at Murici, tomorrow we will try the Worst Dirty Roads in Brazil.

But, the worst the roads the better the birds - To be confirmed tomorrow...

Just arrived at the Araripe Mountain Range: The home of the Famous Araripe Manakin!

So far, we are having a wonderful time! Baturite was fantastic and the drive to here was also very good with Southern Porchard and a nesting pair of long-billed Wren. We also could find some Scarlet-throated Tanagers.

Well, 2010 is around the corner...But, I will have 2009 in a special place in my memory:

I never had seen so many Eagles in just one year - Neither in so many different places: In Mato Grosso I had seen there in four areas: Cristalino Jungle Lodge, Alta Floresta, Serra das Araras and Chapada dos Guimarães.
In Bahia: I found my first nest of the Black-Chested Buzzard-Eagle!!! I saw the parents and their Junvenal taking off...

For 2010, I have great expectations for Lifers - Specially, at the the Atlantic Forest of Bahia and also in Roraima - Where, I hope to be able to go back...

New Home & Old Neighbors

I'm in Aracajú, with the Family & TONS of paper work!!!
We have now, a new home but, THANKS GOD: The same old neighbors - A Happy Family of Great Kiskadees !!!
They raised two youngs - They are alread flying in the near by houses.
Last week, one of the juvenals , stayed for a long time in one of our walls.
Our five year old son, can recognize their call & love them!!!
In fact, they are calling as I write this post.

What an exciting Trip!
Besides, smashing views of the Young Harpy Eagle at Serra das Araras - Including a very nice flight from one tree to another one ( much closer, by the way).

Me and my guests found an adult male at the Chapada dos Guimarães National Park , holding a Collared Anteater / Tamandua!

Chapada dos Guimarães is a place that I had been birding since 30 years ago. Several times I heard reports about Harpy Eagles beeing seen there but, only last week, I got - Finally- My first one!!!

Now, I'm in my way for the Araripe Manakin & Lear's Macaws!

I had my best Agami Heron - Ever !

Birding the Pantanal since 1982, I couldn't believe in my eyes: So close - So nice!!!

After about 20 minutes - I even fed it with some small fishes!!!

I had been going to bed in the last five nights with a smiles on my face!...

Hello !

I'm back to Mato Grosso for a birding trip to the Pantanal, Serra das Araras and Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park. Then, I will go to the city of Fortaleza, for a Photo Trip, at the Brazilian Northeast...

My previous trip to the Pantanal was, absolutely fantastic!!!

I had within an hour: Dark-throated Seedeater and Rufuous-rumped Seedeater.

Plus, my first lek - ever - for Buff-bellied Hermit.

On this trip, I will try to confirm a reliable spot for Red-winged Tinamou: According to a local cowboy, they come at the end of the day, to his back yard to be fed with his chickens !!!

Of course: Has to be seen to be believed - and, that is what I going to do!!!

Great News: Finally, we moved to a new office in Aracajú.

The nice thing about it is the breeze coming from the Ocean.

Here, we need no fan or AC.

There are a few birds around too: Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Southern Lapwing and a pair of Great Kiskadees!!!

Roraima - A Great Birding Destination !

Very few of my reader may had heard about the Brazilian State of Roraima...

Please, don't blame yourself if, you are one of them...

Roraima is still a, completly, unknown destination for most of the people - including birders.

This is a Brazilian State located on the North of Brazil, with borders with Venezuela and the British Guiana.

Its capital is the beautiful city of Boa Vista - Free of House Sparrows & Packed with Tropical Mockingbirds!!!

I will do my best in the next months to spread the word about this magnificent place.

To get there, the best option is to fly to Manaus. Then, with just one hour flight you can reach Boa Vista.

I don't have a bird list to offer, yet. But, it may come up soon...

No House Sparrows!!!

I'm still in Boa Vista, the capital of the Brazilian State of Roraima, teaching birdwatching to the local community.
It is being great - They are very interested & learn quite fast.
But, there is an amazing fact at this town: There is no House Sparrows!!!
I never had been to a Brazilian town , without House Sparrows before...
May be the reason is because , this town is very isolated from any other town...
We are located at the Amazon River Basin, but the vegetation around the city is mostly Savannas.

Right now, sunrise time, they are calling a lot!!! I love their song.

The Tropical Mockingbird is a bird that I had seen only once before - At the Coast of Brazil.

But, here at the State of Roraima, they are found also inland - I will teach , during my BWD course, how blessed the local population is with such fact.

It was great: Hooded Berryeater & Cinnamon-vented Cotinga were great highlights, not mentioning the Araripe Manakin and hundreds of Lear's Macaw.

Hello!

Just got back from a wonderful trip to the Pantanal and Serra das Araras.

At the Pantanal the highlights were a flock of 40 Hyacinth Macaws, a Jaguar - as good as it gets!,
Tapir and a lifer for the Pantanal: Chesnut-capped Blackbird.

At Serra das Araras, we found the young Harpy Eagle just 20 feet above the ground & above our heads!!! After some full frame pictures taken by my guests , we saw it flying to a near by tree and late to another tree - Beautiful Flights!!!

Tomorrow, I'm leaving for the Northeast for a very extensive Birding Tour.

Just got back from a Birding Tour on the Brazilian Northeast: Couldn't be better - We had about 300 Hyacinth Macaws!!!

We saw them flying in flocks, perched on cactus, feeding in Palm trees, grazzing wiht the cattle and even perched on telephone wires!!!

Church Sparrow ?

I'm in Aracajú...Just about to leave for Salvador, from where I will start a 08 day birding tour on the Brazilian NE.
Yesterday ( Sunday) I went to the mass service on a catholic church near by. (I'm a catholic).
During the sermon, I couldn't ignore the House Sparrows calling from inside the church.
The building is a very basic one, without a celling - Just the roof.
The sparrow like to built nests there & like it as a shelter, as well.
This is true for most churches in Brazil - The House Sparrows loves the churches!!!
By the way, in Brazil the Barn Owl is called the Church Owl ( among other names).
So, I wondering why not to call the House Sparrow , the Church Sparrow???

Garden Lifers !

I do have quite a nice garden at my office in Mato Grosso.

Once in a while, I get there - totally - unexpected birds.

The most recent ones are : A Red-crested Finch, that , apparently, is living there & a pair of Toucan Toucans seen on a Cecropia tree.

Today, I'm leaving for the Pantanal. I will also go to Serra das Araras and Chapada National Park.
This time I intend to make a better video & pictures of the Harpy Eagle.

Wonderful News: Just got two more Harpy Eagles at Serra das Araras !

Which makes a total of Six Harpy Eagles seen in, just, two weeks!!!

It is really incredible the contribution Birdwatching has done to learn about them!

Not many years ago, these were almost Mytical birds that no one knew where to find them!!!

Today, the" hard part " is where to choose to watch them!!!

Mato Grosso - The Paradise for Harpy Eagles!

Hello!

I'm about to have 06(six) Harpy Eagles in less than two weeks!

I had a pair at the Cristalino Jungle Lodge then, the father & its chick at the Floresta Amazonica Hotel.

In a few days, I will be at Serra das Araras, where there is another active nest...since the chick is very young one of the parents should be around too...

The feeling of being on a Paradise for Harpy Eagle is awesome!

House Wren

There is a House Wren at my yard.
Today, seems to be a very inspiring day for it! It has been singing all day long!!!
I love it!
This is a bird that has been following me all my life...At my childhood at the State of Paraná & many other places I lived....it's call is a bit different from the one in North America and Europe.
But, not less melodious.

I'm in Aracajú.
Tomorrow, I may go to Sao Paulo to start a trip to the Pantanal and Iguassu Falls.
But, the great event I want to mention was a couple of Barn Owls that I found, yesterday night.
There were fighting it air - right in front of me!!!
When they started flying away, I managed to bring one of them back by doing some pishing...
It came twice - The way it looked at an incredible that I will never forget !

Hello!

I'm back to Crasto - A lovely village, extremely close to the National Forest of Araripe.
This time I came guiding journalists interested on the Araripe Manakin & the National Forest of Araripe.
It rainned but, it wasn't a problem to film it & some of the other Caatinga Endemics such the Caating Antwren, Silvery-Cheeked , Caatinga Barred Antshrike.

I may leave tomorrow but, I'm already missing this wonderful place!!!

The chick is totally visible & constantly with one of the parents at the nest!!!

Today, I would like to report about my recent tour schedule & the coming one:

I already had one trip to the Pantanal, Serra das Araras ( Saw both Harpies at the nest) and Chapada dos Guimarães National Park.
I also went to Canastra ( saw two Brazilian Mergansers) and also to Intervales and Peruíbe.

Next week ( Wed), I will start two week NE tour. Then, one week at the Atlantic Forest ( Itatiaia & Ubatuba), followed by another week at the NE...Then, I will have a two week break, starting again, with a trip to the Pantanal & taking the same group to the Atlantic Forest on the first two weeks of April...

So, please, be patient with me if, I won't be posting, frequently, in the next months at my blog...Thanks.

I'm in my way to Boa Nova Village - State of Bahia. I will be in search of the Slender Antbird!
I will be with a couple from Boston.
The most important thing I would like to comment, today, is: The Slender Antbird is changing the mentality of the local population, concerning Bird Preservation!
SAVE BRAZIL is doing a wonderful work , telling the local dwellers how important & threatned this bird is...And, its working - With wonderful side effects: Many people stopped keeping birds in cage & stopped hunting them with weapons & sling shots - Isn't that great???

Hello!

My next destination will be INTERVALES.
I will be going there next Friday.
This is a State Park, located about 04 hours drive from Sao Paulo City.
It is the largest track of Atlantic Forest left in Brazil.
The Bird Life, there is incredible!!!
Some of the hardest birds such Antbirds, Antshrikes can be seen there without much trouble.
Something that helps a lot are the local guides that knows their birds.
I, highly, recommend this place for those willing to see lots of Brazilian Endemics!

Canastra was GREAT!!!

Just got back from Canastra.

It was great !!!

We got a pair of Brazilian Merganser right on the very first morning!!! Very Close!!!

We also got mostly of our target birds on the upper part of the park such the Cock-tailed Tyrant.

The Giant Anteater were a highlight too!!!

Ornate Hawk-Eagle - Nest Status.

I visited the nest of the Ornate Hawk-Eagle in Chapada dos Guimarães National Park.

There was no bird at the nest & the nest itself was not in very good shape...

So, it is not a reliable nest. But, in other hand the place itself offers a great view of the Forest, specially in the canopy. The best light there is in the afternoon. I, have plans in going back there for a more accurate birding.

It is located at the property of a friend, at the Chapada dos Guimarães. Apparently, is quite deep on the woods. Any how, it will be worthy the try. Yesterday, we managed to photograph the Hyacinth Macaws. But, my guest wants more pictures - Specially, having them flying...

In other hand, the afternoon produced about 800 pictures - The best ones were a Ringed Kingfisher - Full Frame ! White-rumped Monjita eating a caterpillar, White-bellied Seedeater and Rusty-backed Antwren.

Wet'n Wild Pantanal!

Back to the Pantanal !

I arrived by noon - it was quite dry with some dust on the road.

But, in the afternonn rainned a lot! Thanks God a little bit, before that managed to take some of the best pictures I ever saw for the Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch: Perched on barbed-wire - It had its bill opened, and the shape of the tail , totally, visible and in between he pointed wire...Very interesting combination.

Due the rain the Hacinth Macaw, photo session, was postponed for today.

I'm also very grateful to those that were with me on my fight against the pneumonia .
The next days, I shall spend here in Aracajú, with my Family. There is also lots of paper work to be done...It will be tough to find time to do that , enjoy the Family & deal with the Holidays...

In other hand, I have big plans for 2009, with the offer of New Itineraries for Great Value.

As the music says: "On the road again..."
My next guests, are arriving, today, in the morning at the Sao Paulo International Airport.
We shall spend the night on a near by hotel & continue our ride tomorrow, when we will take a flight to Mato Grosso, visiting first the Chapada dos Guimarães National Park. Then, the Amazon Forest and finally the Pantanal.
It will be a total of 16 people!
But, this will be a Natural History oriented tour. When, birds will be just part of the tour...
Still, we shall see LOTS of birds, since the Brazilian Birds are not shy, at all!

I'm Back to Mato Grosso...

Well, I’m back to Mato Grosso.
It was loooong bus ride: 24h!
But, I’m glad to be back to the main office, specially, after some very good rains on the last days…We are now in the Spring – The Rufous-bellied Thrushes are singing ( a lot) again!
But, I’m NOT fully happy – Just got the information about a tragedy : The Grandson – The only one – Of my aunt Emilia, died on a motorbike crash – He was just 19 years old!...
Very, Very Sad…
He lived on a town called ARAPONGAS, which means BELLBIRDS. The most interesting fact about his place is: ALL the streets & Avenues have BIRD NAMES!
As I said, I went there , last weekend. Driving or walking on that towns was like finding lifers:
Hey! This is the Toucan Street – I never had been here before…Then, I was excited to find out the name of the coming street…What? Swallow avenue? Great! I like that!...
Even, extinct birds of Birds of the Ancient Greek, have room there!

I’ m glad in sharing a picture, I took , today about the side walks of this village.

Many years ago a past mayor passed a law that people should have their side walks with the shape of Martins.
But, there is a problem: They used white stones that get brown , due the fact the soil on this area is very rich in iron…
Unless it is nice and clean – It’s kind of hard to appreciate the beauty of the side walk…
I’m leaving, tomorrow, to visit some relatives in a near by town…Then, I will combine it with my trip, by bus – 24h ride – Back to Mato Grosso.
Tuesday is a the day, when I shall place my next message & hopefully, some pictures too!

Today, I had a change on my plans...I went to a near by village , called CIANORTE, where I spent my childhood...It took me one hour driver thru. farm country: Lots of corn, which just got harvested.

I have very good news: I'm cured from my pneumonia!
Thanks God!
I got a "fresh" x-ray , yesterday.
So, yesterday night, I took a overnight bus ride from Sao Paulo City & came to Campo Mourao.
It's is not far from Iguassu Falls. Here lives my mother ( 86 years old!!!) and sister and her daughter.
Tomorrow, I intend to post some pictures of the side walks of this village - It has silhoute of Martins!!!
In the past, this village was been visited by huge flocks of Gray-breasted & Purple Martins!

Hello!

Thanks to everyone that has been wishing me a recovery from my pneumonia.
I'm feeling better. I went to a doctor, Saturday night. He says my lungs are OK. But, I should get a x-ray to be sure...Which I will try to get, today.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of sending a group of birders to the Atlantic Forest. They went with Giuliano.
I was booked for another tour that ended up being cancelled. Any how, it was great to meet the tour participants. I met them , at the airport Saturday night when they arrived from the Pantanal. I shared a room with Giuliano & had breakfast with the group. They will bird at Itatiaia and Ubatuba. I'm excited to hear them about the nest of the Swallow-tailed Cotinga, that I found last August...
Tonight, I may take a bus ride to visit my mother. She lives near Iguassu Falls. I might spend the week with her, because, after this gap on my agenda I only will be able to see her by the third week of December.

Tomorrow, I will take a flight to Sao Paulo City.
I have a few things to do there: Including meeting a group of birders on their way to the Atlantic Forest.
They are three Americans guided by Giuliano Bernandon - Member of the Boute Expeditions Guide Team.
They are taking our Fixed Departure for the September tour.
I also shall visit my two brothers that live there and last but, not least: See a GOOD Doctor, that can give me an up date on the status of my Pneumonia! I'm not feeling totally good and I don't like it - I have a tour to guide around the corner...
I may need to ask my readers to be patient in case, I won't be able to place posts for the next days...
But, as soon as I can, I hope to bring good news - Specially , about the Harpy Eagle Nesting site at Serra das Araras, which I scheduled to bird.

Scarlet Ibis II

Yesterday, I went for the Scarlet Ibis, with Prof. Marcelo Cardoso. We had a great time watching this magnificent bird - We spent about 20 minutes there...
By the way, we found a young man, watching birds too. He didn't have a pair of binoculars so, he used on of ours.
Prof. Marcelo told me this particular individual has been seen in the Coast of the State of Sergipe for the past five years. Always alone, having a very erratic behaivour.
Any how, anyone birding in Aracajú can have hopes of seeing the Scarlet Ibis. Isn't that great?

Today, I shall go back to the egret & heron roosting place, trying to have a second look at the Scarlet Ibis.
I may have the Company of my very good friend: Marcelo Cardoso.
In the past, the Scarlet Ibis was a commom bird in Brazil ( about 500 years ago). The Brazilian Indians were even doing dresses with their feathers!!!
Polutions & destruction of their Natural Habitat, made them almost disapear...But, there are some places they still can be found: Marajó Island ( where the Amazon River flows into the Atlantic Ocean) and in Cubatão village , near São Paulo City.

I went to visit a roost for Great & Cattle Egrets, when, I found one Scarlet Ibis, among them.
What a nice surprise!!!

Fierce Competition among Cattle Egrets.

Today, doing a morning walk with my four year old son, we stoped to watch about 10 caws there were grazzing, mostly of them were followed by cattle eggrets. There was a particular one that has two cattle egretts, a bit away from the other, when it started grazzing in a taller grass, aparently, a bit more bug productive, two more cattle eggrets, joined them...the first one , was OK but, the second one chased away a previous one...which attracted one more cattle eggret...I got impressed with this "Fierce Competition"!
Since the cattle is not that bad...We tend to get the cattle behaviour would be "contagious"...Another thing I noted: There where NEW eggrets joining the flocks...apparently, they are not true to a particular flock...
instead, keeping searching for food watching other flocks/individuals...

Today, I would like to mention how impressed I got, with the success of PERMETHRIN.
I went to the Pantanal, recently, with a couple.
They, both, were using PERMETHRIN. I didn't. Instead, I trusted my leather boots to keep chiggers & ticks away from me.
It didn't work!
I ended up catching three ticks...
They got none!
The good thing about PERMETHRIN is : You don't need to use it directly on your skin, only on clothes.
From now on...I will recommend it to my guests.

Fork-tailed Flycatcher.

Recently, I saw something that I don't remember seeing before or heard about it: Fork-tailed Flycatchers feeding on fruits.

This time of the year, they are migrating South, since the end of the winter is around the corner...
I was in my way to Chapada dos Guimarães National Park, when I saw a flock of about 10 Fork-tailed Flycatchers, feeding on a very small fruit, produced by a native trip Curatella americana.
The birds never perched to get the fruit but, were catching them, flying right next to the branches.
Surely, it was a "private performance!" :-)

(At this moment, my heart goes to the ones that may be affected by the “Gustav”).
Today, I want to talk about a corner of my yard, here in Aracajú, where I have a Papaya Tree.

It is being the “natural feeder” for Palm Tanagers, Great Kiskadees and Tufted-ear Marmoset. They cause a “mess” because they end up dropping the seeds on the ground and some pieces of the fruit, as well.
In other hand, it makes me very happy knowing these lovely creatures are being well fed!
Again: Let pray for the dwellers of Baton Rouge…

But, I quoted as a gift the Southern House Wren that was singing at our back yard for about 30 minutes!

Road to the Pantanal : Cuiabá / Poconé

Hello!

Last Saturday, I made a quick bird ride to the Pantanal. My guest was in need of Greater Rhea & Hyacinth Macaws. Since he had a afternoon flight, we only could spend the morning birding.
We left his hotel near the airport by 7:00 AM.
We drove toward Poconé but, we made a quick stop by the Bento Gomes River to watch a parrot : What a surprise - It was a Yellow-faced Parrot. Never ever seen on this area! Only in Chapada dos Guimarães National Park. Then, it got joined by another parrot: A Orange-winged Parrot. Also not common on the area - Double Surprise. Then, we had a very good views of a Red-bileed Scythbill. Soon after, passing the bridge, we stop to look a Savanna Hawk - Another surprise: A Greater Rhea was right behind it! Well, with no more ” pressure in my shouleders” we made a few more stops for birds: Chotoy Spinetail, Chesnut-bellied Seedeater…We arrived at the Pantanal by 08:30 - In time to have wonderful views of the Hyacinth Macaws!
We returned to his hotel by 12:30 pm, where we celebrated our tour with a very nice meal - A Brazilian “Feijoada” ( Beans soup with Pork).
